R&M 2008 Shipping Schedule

Our breeding season normally runs from mid March to September
We will ship (with sufficient notice) any day Fed Ex is operating, Monday through Friday for delivery Tuesday through Saturday, starting mid March, with the following exceptions:

•   lf we know of no client mares that are close to ovulation, we sometimes run away for an overnight ride, or a long weekend, so it is imperative that you keep us informed of your mare’s condition. We want every mare settled by the end of the season!

Here is the information that you will need to have your mare bred. We have tried to be thorough for those who may be venturing into new territory. If there is anything that you do not find the answer to here, feel free to contact us with your questions.

Pre-Breeding Health Tips

We no longer are taking mares to breed on our premises and do not have any health requirements for mares receiving shipped-cooled semen, however, because of the time and expense involved in the breeding and bringing a mare to term, a thorough pre-breeding examination (with culture and/or biopsy) is highly recommended for all mares who are going to be bred for the following reasons:

  •  To detect any abnormal problems your mare may have, either infectious or physical. This can include maiden, as will as, producing mares. Producing mares can develop problems at foaling time, that can predispose them to breeding problems. Maiden mares occasionally have anatomical problems that prevent breeding and conception.
  •  An infected mare (not always detected externally by discharge) will not settle thus necessitating multiple unsuccessful breedings, adding time and expense to the procedure and failing to attain pregnancy.
  •  Physical problems in the maiden mare can include persistent membranes and undeveloped genital organs. Physical problems in the producing mare include tears and lacerations incurred during foaling.

What You Should Know About Breeding by Shipped-Semen

1.    Have your mare checked for reproductive soundness.
2.    Fill out and return the breeding contract plus breeding fee (or booking fee/deposit to hold your place) as specified in contract, and we will put you on our shipping schedule. Let us know if you want us to return a copy of the breeding contract for your records. You may fax us your signed contract and use Master Card or Visa for payment (call to fax, or mail the signed contract and check. We strongly recommend having a credit card on file with us in case you need an immediate shipment that you did not anticipate. No semen will be shipped before the contract and breeding fees are received in our office.
3.    It is helpful to be able to tease your mare with a gelding or nearby stallion. Knowing when your mare is cycling can save on vet bills. When your mare is in heat, you will need to work closely with your veterinarian to ascertain where your mare is in her cycle and when she will ovulate. Call us to alert us as soon as you know that your mare is in heat. We can work directly with your vet if it is more convenient.
4.    We need 24 hours notice to ship. Please give us enough notice. If there is a chance you will need semen the next day, let us know to wait for your call in the morning. Communication is the key to getting your mare settled. We will call you or your vet's office with a tracking number as soon as we have a shipment ready to go.
5.    Your vet will inseminate your mare. There will be two 40 ml packets of cooled semen. It is strongly advised to use the first packet of semen within 24 hours of collection for the best chance of pregnancy. If there is a delay the entire container may be put into a refrigerator to keep the temperature at 40 degrees F.
6.    Have your mare checked at 14 to 18 days after the last day bred. An ultrasound test, if available, is the best method to detect pregnancy. 30% of all mares have false heats when they are actually pregnant.
7.    If the mare is not in foal, you may be shipped semen as often as necessary, throughout this breeding season and a return privilege next season. However, each additional shipment will require a lab/shipping fee as specified in the contract.
8.    In the event your mare fails to conceive, you may substitute another mare that you own (or lease) for the remainder of your contract. Please inform us of any intended change in mares in writing, so that we can adjust your contract.

Payment Options

It is strongly recommended that you keep a credit card on file with us. Your mare could be at the optimum time for breeding the first time you have her checked, or, when you take her back for a pregnancy check, she could be open and in need of another shipment. No semen will be shipped before a signed contract and breeding fees are in our office. We will charge your card on the day of shipment unless you request an earlier date.

If you need to send us the contract and check, please send them to:
