Marie's story

Updated on: August 30th, 2009

Dixie and I had a great 'comeback' year. We won all the gaited classes at Montana Mule Days in June and then went to Denver and won the Colorado AGMA State Championship. Dixie was wonderful considering that she sure hasn't had a lot of saddle time this year and was just getting back in full swing by the last few classes. They had a wonderfully inventive Trail Class called Urban Trail Obstacle that was a timed gamblers choice with obstacles that none of the contestants (or their mounts) had ever seen before. Dixie won first and had a great time doing it. I may be projecting- but I think she enjoys beating horses! My other mule, Vaquero, came in dead last and was not impressed at all with the innovation of the obstacles. Personally, I am just grateful to be back in the saddle at all and plan to do a lot more recreational riding this fall and have all my mules ready for the 2010 season!

Lonesome's book is now closed to outside mares. After 12 years of producing many of the country's most gaited, gorgeous and trainable mules, he and I both are looking forward to retiring him to a pasture full of good gaited jennies. Now this will be good news for many of you who have searched in vain for a gaited jack like Lonesome! I should have weanlings next year and I do have a waiting list already so be sure to let me know if you would like to be contacted about the arrival of a Lonesome Jack or Jennet.

We will continue to list client mules out of Lonesome that come up for sale.

As always, I love to talk mules and will be available for answering questions either by phone or email.

I have been working with the American Gaited Mule Association in building a web site. So far I have been as lax in keeping it up to date as I have been with this one, but that will change this year! This is going to be a great place to advertising your gaited mules for sale, find gaited mules to buy, and just find out what is going on in the industry. So take a look at the AGMA web site.

Happy Trails!

What is a gaited mule?
 The American Gaited Mule Association

A gaited mule is any mule that has a smooth gait other than a walk, and one which is distinct from a trot. Some gaits are; single-foot, fox-trot, rack, running walk, stepping pace, paso fino, and other smooth gaits, whatever you might call them.
Whatever the gait may be called, its primary virtue is smoothness. The gaited mule (or horse, for that matter) can be ridden farther without discomfort from the bouncing one experiences at a trot, and at a more manageable pace than a canter. A gaited mule is great for trail riding, for obvious reasons.

Mission Statement
Since the beginning of R&M, our purpose has been to raise naturally gaited saddle mules of good conformation and superior temperament and to promote the gaited saddle mule. In honor of my husband's memory, I will continue to do this and raise the type of mule that he loved and that have made R&M a success in the mule industry.
